Hair has three distinct layers. The cuticle, or exterior layer, is composed of overlapping “shingles,” flat, transparent pieces that protect the inner parts of the hair shaft. The cortex, the second layer, is made up of elongated cells that grow end on end rather than overlapping and give the hair its flexibility and tensile strength. The cortex contains the pigments that give our hair its natural color; when hair turns gray, this source of pigmentation has been depleted. The innermost layer of the hair is the medulla. It is composed of two rows of cells that grow side by side through the length of the shaft. It deter¬ mines the strength, body and elasticity of the hair.

When any one of these layers is damaged, the hair is weakened, sometimes beyond repair. My treatments not only halt such damage but repair it as well. There are an estimated one thousand hairs per square inch on the average scalp, which amounts to as many as 140,000 hairs per head. I tell my clients to think of their hair as a green onion. How does hair grow?

Hair grows at a rate of approximately one-half inch per month from two to six years, then rests for about three months before being pushed out by a new hair that has been slowly growing its way up through the skin. When the cycle is normal, we lose eighty to one hundred hairs per day. If you are not shedding, your roots are not producing new hair. The formation of new growth depends entirely upon how much nourishment each papilla and root get from the bloodstream, and how clean the scalp is, so that new hair can push its way through to the surface.
