  • Schedule IV substances

    Drugs with less abuse potential than Schedule III substances but available only by prescription.  

  • Schedule III substances

    Drugs considered to have less abuse potential than Schedule II substances. Available by prescription with limited refills.  

  • Schedule II substances

    Under federal law, substances that have a high potential for abuse with resultant psychological and physical dependence, e.g., morphine, amphetamine, oxycodone. Available only by prescription.

    Under federal law, substances that have no accepted medical use in the United States; e.g. heroin, LSD, psilocybin.  

  • Scavenger cells

    Any of a variety of cells that have the capacity to engulf and destroy foreign material and dead tissues. A phagocytic cell, such as a macrophage or a neutrophil, that cleans up disintegrating tissues or cells.
