Hallucinogens, also known as psychedelics, cause the distortion of a person’s senses, emotions, perceptions, thinking, and self-awareness. These distortions are known as hallucinations. For example, vision can be perceived as sound, and smell can be perceived as vision. Pseudohallucinations are also possible; in these, the user knows that the perceptions are not reality and are due to the use of the drug (Hallucinogens: Natural and Synthetic). In general, the drugs are not considered life threatening. However, because the hallucinations may be very frightening to the user, the user may attempt to escape the perceptions; this has led to very dangerous behavior in some individuals, such as jumping from windows or running in front of moving vehicles (Hallucinogens: Natural and Synthetic).
