Obstacles barring people with physical handicaps from free access to buildings, such as stairs, narrow doorways, and inaccessible bathrooms. Many older buildings are completely inaccessible to people with physical disabilities, but various laws are requiring that at least some be modified for free access; the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, for example, requires that school buildings be made accessible to disabled students. New construction of many kinds, especially schools and buildings supported by federal funds, must be designed for easy access.
Any limitation in the design of facilities that restricts their access and use by persons with disabilities.
