Imperforate anus

The lack of an outer opening for the anus, a birth defect that requires immediate surgical correction.

An abnormality present at birth in which the rectum is closed, requiring immediate surgery to allow for elimination.

A birth defect in which an infant is born without a fully developed anus. The anus is the external opening of the rectum through which stools pass. When a baby is born with an imperforate, or closed, anus, there are two possible causes. The anus may be covered with skin, or, more rarely and seriously, the anal canal fails to develop before birth.

Partial or complete obstruction of the anus: a condition, discovered at birth, due to failure of the anus to develop normally in the embryo. There are several different types of imperforate anus, including developmental anal stenosis, persistent anal membrane, and covered anus (due to fused genital folds). If the anal canal fails to develop, the rectum ends blindly above the muscles of the perineum. Most mild cases of imperforate anus can be treated by a simple operation. If the defect is extensive a temporary opening is made in the colon, with later surgical reconstruction of the rectum 2ind anus.

Condition in which the anus is closed.

A congenital abnormality, known as a birth defect, characterized by the rectum being formed as a cul-de-sac, resulting in the absence of an anus.

A birth defect where there is a missing opening in the anal area, which can be corrected through surgery.
