One of three muscles of the posterior thigh that flexes the knee; extends and rotates the hip when contracted.
A muscle of the posterior thigh (the hamstring group) originating on the ischial tuberosity and inserted in the medial condyle of the tibia. It extends the thigh, flexes and medially rotates the leg, and is controlled by the sciatic nerve.
