An infection in humans that is transmitted by the black-legged tick and the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) in the United States. Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) is an illness that resembles Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Unlike Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which is caused by bacteria of the Rickettsia genus, HGE is caused by bacteria of the Ehrlichia genus.
