A tumor that occurs in the rectum or cecum of the large intestine and is caused by the parasite Entamoeba histolytica, a protozoan that invades and destroys the walls of the gut. Tumors may ulcerate and become infected with pus-forming (pyogenic) bacteria, causing severe inflammation of the bowel wall. The tumors usually harden and may even obstruct the bowel.
