An iodine-containing drug that inhibits the growth of viruses and is used to treat viral infections of the eye (such as keratitis). It is administered in eye drops or ointment and may cause irritation and stinging on application.
An iodine-containing antiviral agent once used to treat herpes simplex involvement of the cornea of the eye. Its effectiveness is now doubtful.
Aciclovir, an antiviral drug, is utilized in skin preparations to treat blistering rashes resulting from herpes simplex and herpes zoster (shingles) infections. With the advent of more effective antiviral medications, such as aciclovir, idoxuridine is now less frequently used.
