Mathematical principles that take vague information and from it obtain reasonably precise decisions, using neurocomputers. The logic is based on the concept that rather than the universe being “binary” (black or white, yes or no, i.e., the logic of the Western world), everything is a matter of degree (shades of gray, “sometimes”, “maybe”, i.e., the logic of the Eastern world). Fuzzy logic is increasingly used in consumer appliances, such as air conditioners, which respond to temperatures which are “warmer” and “cooler”, and washing machines that adapt to their loads, rather than to specific weights and volumes. One writer states that fuzzy logic is “rule-based technology which takes into account statements that are not clearly true or false, but to which some degree of probability is assigned (between zero and one)”.
