The appearance of papules resembling insect bites on the skin of persons who swim in water containing the cercariae of certain schistosomes. It is usually present only on exposed surfaces of the skin. The papules appear from 4 to 13 days after exposure. The disease is self-limited; thus treatment is symptomatic.
An inflammatory skin condition resulting from an allergic reaction to flatworms that perish beneath the skin, leading to an irritating and itchy rash.
A skin rash that emerges subsequent to swimming in freshwater tainted with a type of fluke that parasitizes snails and wildfowl. The itching is the result of fluke larvae tunneling through the skin. Swimmer’s itch can potentially be a symptom of schistosomiasis.
