Unexpected deviation from the normal treatment outcome. It is generally classified as either technical or biological, e.g., surgical complication, hemorrhage, damage to the inferior alveolar nerve, infection, delayed wound healing, or lack of osseointegration.

The occurrence of a complication is determined in the PPS by the presence, as a secondary ICD-9-CM diagnosis code in the patient’s bill, of a condition defined by PPS as a complication.
An added difficulty; a complex state; a disease or accident superimposed on another without being specifically related, yet affecting or modifying the prognosis of the original disease (e.g., pneumonia is a complication of measles and is the cause of many deaths from that disease).
