Inflammation of the meninges without obvious evidence of bacterial infection. It typically results from a viral infection (e.g., coxsackievirus or other enteroviruses), although frequently no causative organism is identified.
An alternate term occasionally employed to refer to meningitis that is not caused by bacterial infection.
