Coliform bacteria

Groups of aerobic bacteria in which Escherichia coli is an important member. Usually arise be- cause of fecal contamination.


Intestinal bacilli that are gram-negative, sugar-digesting, and both aerobic and anaerobic. They are usually from the family Enterobacteriaceae; Escherichia coli is the best known of the group.


A group of bacteria whose presence in drinking water is suggestive of fecal contamination.
