Direct examination of the anus and rectum with a proctoscope, to detect abnormalities.

Examination of the anus and rectum by using a rigid, cylindrical tube called a proctoscope. Proctoscopy enables the doctor to locate the source of bloody discharge from the anus. However, today proctoscopy has been largely superseded by flexible sigmoidoscopy. In contrast with proctoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy allows the physician to see upward from the rectum into the sigmoid colon by using a slim, flexible, lighted tube called an endoscope. A flexible endoscope is usually more comfortable and easily passes further up the colon. An even more extensive alternative is colonoscopy (examination of the large intestine from the rectum up through the colon, to the lower end of the small intestine, with a special endoscope).

A medical procedure involving the insertion of a slender tube equipped with a camera and light source into the rectum, enabling the physician to visually examine its interior.

The analysis of the anus and rectum is conducted using a proctoscope, which is a firm visual instrument.
