Lining cells

Old osteoblasts occupying the surface of mineralized bone with the primary function of nutritional transfer from the surface to osteocytes via cellular extensions. They participate in the normal physiologic remodeling of bone by digesting the osteoclastresistant surface layer, whereby the bone matrix is opened and osteocalcin is released from the bone matrix. The osteocalcin is osteoclast‐chemotactic.
