Educational programs provided by high schools in cooperation with community colleges or universities in which certain qualifying students are allowed to pursue college-level courses for college credit while still in high school.
In education, granting a student a position above that of most entrants, usually after demonstration of proficiency in some aspects of the coursework; also called advanced standing. In one common type of advanced placement, students receive college credit for passing set examinations, such as those offered under the Advanced Placement Program, College-Level Examination Program, or Proficiency Examination Program. Students who transfer from one school to another receive advanced placement on the basis of their work at their previous school. Some students, though mostly returning adults, can gain either college credit or waiver of required basic courses if they have, on their own, acquired special knowledge; this is sometimes called experiential learning or life-experience credit.
