Atlas

The first vertebra of the neck that articulates with the skull.

The top vertebra in the spine, which supports the skull and pivots on the axis or second vertebra.

First cervical vertebra; the first verebra in the neck, hinging with the skull at the occipitd bone (compare AXIS).

The first cervical vertebra (Cl) located directly below the occipital bone of the cranium.

The first cervical vertebra, by means of which the skull is articulated to the backbone.

The first cervical vertebra by which the spine articulates with the occipital bone of the head; named for Atlas, the Greek god who was supposed to support the world on his shoulders.

The atlas, the uppermost cervical vertebra in the human spine, plays a vital role in supporting and connecting to the skull. It forms a pivot joint with the second cervical vertebra, known as the axis, enabling the atlas to rotate and facilitate the turning of the head from side to side. This pivotal mechanism grants us the ability to engage in lateral head movements.

The initial neck vertebra that supports the head.
