Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)

An acronym for the controversial drug, dimethyl sulfoxide, originally used by veterinarians to reduce joint inflammation in animals, and presently used by some athletes for joint and soft tissue injuries.


Anti-inflammatory agent used topically to treat some injuries, or in combination with other drugs to facilitate their absorption through the skin.


A chemical used in an ointment to treat skin inflammations or in combination with other topically applied drugs to improve their absorption. It may cause skin irritation.


A solvent used to treat interstitial cystitis. The drug was previously believed to improve the absorption of medications from the skin, and it was used to treat rheumatic diseases.
