Hematinic

Any drug that increases the hemoglobin and red blood cell count.


Drug (e.g., ferrous sulfate or other iron-containing compound) that increases the hemoglobin content of the blood; it is used to treat or prevent iron-deficiency anemia.


A drug that increases the amount of hemoglobin in the blood, e.g. ferrous sulfate and other iron-containing compounds. Hematinics are used, often in combination with vitamins and ‘folic acid, to prevent and treat anemia due to iron deficiency. They are used particularly to prevent anemia during pregnancy. Digestive disturbances sometimes occur with hematinics.


A substance that enhances blood quality by raising hemoglobin levels and increasing the count of red blood cells (erythrocytes).
