Pathognomonic

Specifically distinctive, characteristic or symptomatic of a disease. A sign or symptom on which a diagnosis can be made.


A symptom or group of symptoms that are specifically diagnostic or typical of a disease.


Referring to a symptom which is typical and characteristic, and which indicates that someone has a particular disease.


Describing a sign or symptom that is specific to or characteristic of a particular disease (e.g., Koplik’s spots on the mucous membranes of the mouth are pathognomonic for measles).


Pertaining to the essential, characteristic symptoms specific to a disease, which permit diagnosis of that disease.


Describing a symptom or sign that is characteristic of or unique to a particular disease. The presence of such a sign or symptom allows positive diagnosis of the disease.


A term applied to signs or symptoms which are especially characteristic of certain diseases, and on the presence or absence of which the diagnosis depends. Thus the discovery of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the sputum is said to be pathognomonic of pulmonary tuberculosis.


A medical expression used for a distinctive sign or symptom inherent to a disease or disorder, which alone is adequate to establish a diagnosis.


A symptom or indicator so distinct to a disease that it confirms the diagnosis.
