Iatrogenic disease

An illness caused by improper medication or medical care.

A disease caused by or arising as a complication of medical or surgical intervention.

A condition inadvertently caused by medical treatment or a physician’s actions is termed an iatrogenic disease. For instance, if too much of an overactive thyroid gland is surgically removed, resulting in an underactive gland, the resulting condition is considered iatrogenic. Another example could be a patient developing anxiety or a nervous disorder after being informed about their diagnosis, or possibly after misunderstanding a comment made by the doctor either directly or to someone else.
