Legionnaire’s disease

An infection causing a form of bronchopneumonia. First identified in 1976, after an outbreak at a Legionnaire’s convention in Philadelphia. It is caused by a gram-negative microorganism, Legionella pneumophila.

An infection caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila that may cause pneumonia. The Legionella bacterium, which is common in the environment, is found predominantly in warm, stagnant water, including in some plumbing systems, hot water tanks, cooling towers, condensers of large air-conditioning systems, humidifiers, showers, and whirlpool spas. In nature, it can be found in creeks and ponds and in soil at excavation sites.


An infection of the lungs, caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, named after an outbreak of 182 cases at the American Legion convention in Pennsylvania in 1976. Symptoms appear after an incubation period of about seven days: malaise and muscle pain are succeeded by a fever, dry cough, chest pain, and breathlessness. There is loss of protein in the urine and impaired kidney function. X-ray of the lungs shows patchy consolidation. Erythromycin provides the most effective therapy.


A form of pneumonia due to the bacterium Legionella pneumophila, so-called because the first identified outbreak was in a group of US ex-servicemen (members of the American Legion). Inhalation of water aerosols seems the most likely way of acquiring the disease, for example from air conditioning outlets. In the presence of the disease, the treatment of infected water systems is essential by cleaning, chlorination, heating or a combination of all three.


A severe, sometimes fatal disease characterized by pneumonia, dry cough, myalgia, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms. It may occur in epidemics or sporadically and is an important cause of nosocomial pneumonia because health-care associated legionellosis, while rare, is more likely to be fatal than legionellosis acquired in the community at large. Approx. 8,000 – 18,000 people are infected each year in the U.S. Persons at risk include middle-aged or older adults who smoke cigarettes or have chronic lung disease and those whose immune systems are compromised by diabetes, renal failure, organ transplantation, cancer, or AIDS. The disease is responsible for about 5% of all pneumonias.


Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia instigated by Legionella Pneumophila, a bacterium that thrives in damp, warm settings and stagnant water. This ailment can emerge in clusters of cases. Frequently, the origin of infection is an air-conditioning system within a sizable public structure, and the disease is contracted through inhaling droplets of water that are contaminated.


Initial signs encompass a headache, along with muscular and abdominal discomfort, accompanied by diarrhea and an unproductive cough. Subsequently, within the following days, pneumonia emerges, leading to elevated fever, pronounced shivering, expulsion of dense sputum (phlegm), drowsiness, and occasionally delirium. There is also the possibility of harm to the liver and kidneys.


Therapeutic measures involve administering antibiotic medications like clarithromycin and rifampicin. While most individuals recuperate, the elderly tend to face elevated mortality rates.
