Licensed practical nurse

A trained professional in basic nursing skills who assists in providing the medical and other health needs of patients.


A nurse who has practical experience in the provision of nursing care but is not a graduate of a formal program of nursing education (e.g., diploma school). The education, required experience, licensure and job responsibilities of LPXs are fairly variable.


A graduate of a school of practical nursing who has passed the practical nursing state board examination and is licensed to administer care, usually working under the direction of a licensed physician or a registered nurse.


An individual who holds a license to deliver fundamental nursing care while working under the guidance of a physician or a registered nurse.
