A unit of volume in the metric system.
A unit of volume equal to the volume occupied by 1 kilogram of pure water at 4°C and 760 mmHg pressure. In SI units the liter is treated as a special name for the cubic decimeter, but is not used when a high degree of accuracy is required ( 1 liter = 1.0000028 dm³). For approximate purposes 1 liter is assumed to be equal to 1000 cubic centimeters (cm³), therefore 1 milliliter (ml) is often taken to be equal to 1 cm³. This practice is now deprecated.
SI (metric) fluid measure; equivalent to 1000 ml, 270 fl drams, 61 cu in, 33.8 fl oz, or 1.0567 qt. The volume occupied by 1 kg of water at 4°C and 760 mm Hg pressure.
