Protocol

Precise and detailed set of instructions or directions for performing a study. The instructions state what the study will do and how and why it will be performed. It explains how many subjects will be included, who is eligible to participate (i.e., inclusion and exclusion criteria), what and how often study agents or other interventions will be performed, what controls and tests will be included, what information will be gathered, and how the information will be analyzed.


The set of instructions for the clinical management of a particular condition, including tests, surgery and drug treatments.


A plan of treatment or management. As used currently in hospital finance and quality management, a “protocol” typically means that, for a patient with a given problem, certain diagnostic and treatment procedures and length of stay are expected.


Formal ideas, plans, or expectations concerning the actions of those involved in patient care, bench work, administration, or research.
