The postovulatory phase. The second half of the menstrual cycle.
Second half of the menstrual cycle, after ovulation during which progesterone secreted by the corpus luteum stimulates the development and thickening of the endometrium in preparation for the implantation of an embryo. If fertilization does not occur, the secretory phase ends as the corpus luteum involutes, progesterone levels decrease, and menstrual flow begins. Also called luteal phase.
