Adult (or acute) respiratory distress syndrome is an inflammatory disease of the lung characterized by the sudden onset of pulmonary edema and respiratory failure. The disorder is also known as wet lung, shock lung, stiff lung, and posttraumatic pulmonary insufficiency.
