Allantoin

Powder from the herb comfrey, used to treat skin disorders.

Prepared synthetically, this powder, which occurs naturally in comfrey root, has been used as an adjuvant in the treatment of skin ulcers. It has been thought to stimulate the formation of the surface epithelial layer of skin, but its therapeutic value is now more dubious.

A white crystalline substance in allantoic and amniotic fluids and the end product of purine metabolism in mammals other than primates. It is produced synthetically by the oxidation of uric acid. It is used in some cosmetics, mouthwashes, and pharmaceuticals.
