Blood typing

The analysis of blood for transfusion factors and blood group.


Technique for determining a person’s blood type or group. In typing for the commonly used ABO blood group system, blood cells are matched with serum known to be type A or type B, and whether or not agglutination (clumping) of the cells occurs determines the type.


The classification of red blood cells by the proteins and carbohydrates (antigens) found on the surface of the erythrocyte membrane.


The method used to determine the antigens present on a person’s blood cells.
