Census

A systematic count or survey.


The number of patients in a hospital at a given time.


A calculation of the number of inpatients receiving care each day. The daily hospital census in many facilities is computed by actual count of the number of patients occupying beds during the night shift. Newborn babies in obstetric wards generally are not counted in a hospital census.


In hospital management, the number of patients confined within the hospital.
