Cephalic index

A measurement of the shape of the skull.

Measurement used to determine whether the head is of normal shape. The index is a ratio of the width of the head (measured where the width is greatest) multiplied by 100 and divided by the length of the head (measured where it is greatest). A number of 74.9 or less indicates a head much longer than it is wide; 75-80, one that has a medium length; and more than 80, one that is disproportionately short.

A measure of the shape of a skull, commonly used in craniometry: the ratio of the greatest breadth, multiplied by 100, to the greatest length of the skull.

Skull breadth multiplied by 100 and divided by the length of the skull.

The proportion obtained by multiplying the skull’s width by a hundred and then dividing by its length.
