Cerebellar ataxia

A disorder where a person staggers and cannot speak clearly, due to a disease of the cerebellum.

Uncoordinated movements, including an unsteady gait, caused by damage to or disease of the cerebellum. Brain tumours, multiple sclerosis and stroke can result in ataxia — as can excessive consumption of alcohol, and degeneration of the cerebellum as a result of inherited disease. Affected victims may have slurred speech, hand tremors and nystagmus.

An irregular, unsteady manner of walking characterized by abrupt, stumbling steps and various other disordered movements can occur as a result of cerebellar disease or damage. Additional accompanying symptoms may involve slurred speech known as dysarthria, hand tremors, and abnormal, jerky eye movements referred to as nystagmus.

Potential causes of this condition encompass stroke, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, damage arising from alcohol dependence, and an inherited disorder affecting the cerebellum.
