An obstruction in the ileum caused by paralysis of the muscles of the intestine.
A serious condition in which the muscles of the small intestine become paralyzed and fail to function normally. Paralytic ileus may develop following abdominal surgery or in people who are otherwise severely ill. It can be caused by inflammatory conditions such as a perforated ulcer, acute diverticulitis, or acute cholecystitis.
Paralysis of the intestinal smooth muscles with distention of the abdomen, nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, and inability to pass stool or gas. It may occur after abdominal surgery, during an episode of peritonitis, or after the administration of some drugs (e.g., narcotics).
