In education, to have a level of performance that is considered evidence of satisfactory learning, whether for a specific test or piece of work or for a whole course; in the latter case a teacher will award the student credit (formal or informal) for the course. Sometimes the passing level is a preset grade, such as a D average or a numerical average above 65 or 70; sometimes no grade or ranking is assigned, and the “pass” label only distinguishes those who received credit for the course from those who failed and so received no credit, in a pass-fail system.
