A set of agreed signs made with the fingers and hands, used to indicate words by or for people who cannot hear or speak.
Language that uses expressive gestures and movements of the hands, face, and body to communicate words and concepts. Developed to allow communication with and among people who have ear and hearing problems, sign language is a key part of the total communication approach but is shunned by people who believe that deaf children should not use any form of manual communication. Though sign language can be translated into English for hearing people who do not know sign language, it actually has its own vocabulary and grammar. Various sign language systems are used, including American Sign Language (ASL or Ameslan), Signed English, Seeing Essential English (SEE), and Signing Exact English.
