Abduction

Moving a limb away from the midline of the body.


The movement of a body part in the frontal plane away from the midline of the body, adduction.


The movement of a part of the body away from the centre line of the body or away from a neighbouring part.


Moving of a part away from the body, as a limb being drawn away from the center of the body.


Lateral movement of the limbs away from the median plane of the body, or lateral bending of the head or trunk.


Abduction refers to the movement of a limb away from the body’s central line or the movement of a digit away from the axis of a limb. The muscles responsible for executing this movement are known as abductors.
