The backflow of acidic fluid from the stomach into the esophagus, which is the tube connecting the throat to the stomach, is known as acid reflux. This condition occurs due to the inadequate functioning of the muscular valve located at the lower end of the esophagus.
Referred to as gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux can lead to inflammation of the esophagus, causing a painful burning sensation in the chest commonly known as heartburn. This discomfort arises due to a condition called esophagitis, which involves inflammation of the esophagus.
Mild instances of acid reflux are generally common and not considered severe. This condition can occur occasionally during pregnancy and frequently affects individuals who are overweight. However, recurrent episodes of discomfort may be indicative of a hiatus hernia, wherein a portion of the stomach protrudes into the chest cavity.
