Aerobe

A microorganism that can live and grow in the presence of molecular oxygen.

An organism that requires oxygen to live (respire).

Growing or proceeding only in the presence of oxygen.

Organisms which require oxygen or air for growth.

Micro-organisms able to reproduce in an oxygenated environment. If oxygen is essential the organism is described as an obligatory (or strict) aerobe. If also able to flourish without oxygen the organism is termed a facultative anaerobe. Most aerobes possess a cytochrome system, which acts as a co-enzyme in the transfer of oxygen to the cell, and catalase to effect the breakdown of evolved hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen.

Organism that thrives in air or more particularly oxygen (compare anaerobe).

A microbe that is able to live and reproduce in the presence of oxygen.

Bacteria that require oxygen for survival, also known as aerobium.
