Air

A mixture of gases, mainly oxygen and nitrogen, which cannot be seen, but which exists all round us and which is breathed.

The invisible, tasteless, odorless mixture of gases surrounding the Earth. Air at sea level consists of approx. 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen by volume. The remaining constituents are water vapor, carbon dioxide, and traces of ammonia, argon, helium, neon, krypton, xenon, rare gases, and some pollutants.

Air, the transparent and scentless combination of gases enveloping the Earth, constitutes the atmosphere. It primarily consists of 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen, trace amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases, and a variable quantity of water vapor.

The delicate balance of atmospheric gases is primarily upheld by the interdependent requirements of plants and animals. Through the process of photosynthesis, plants utilize carbon dioxide and release oxygen, while animals consume oxygen during respiration and generate carbon dioxide as a byproduct. However, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is gradually rising due to extensive deforestation and the combustion of fossil fuels, contributing to the significant global warming phenomenon known as the greenhouse effect.
