A physician who specializes in immunology and is specially trained in prevention, diagnosis, management, and treatment of allergies and asthma. An allergist has completed medical school, been awarded a medical degree , and been trained in internal medicine or pediatrics for 3 years. This training is followed by 2 years of study, called a fellowship in an allergy/immunology training program. After completing this fellowship, the physician may become certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology by successfully passing the certifying examination.
