Amebic dysentery

An intestinal disease caused by a protozoan, the ameba.

Inflammation of the intestine caused by Entamoeba histolytica, usually acquired through feces-contaminated food or water, and characterized by frequent, loose, usually blood-tinged stools and sometimes liver involvement.

Inflammation of the colon caused by infection with an ameba (a single-celled parasite), causing bloody diarrhea, excess mucus secretion, and abdominal cramps. Amebic dysentery is most common in countries with poor sanitation and is caused by consuming water or food that is contaminated with particles of feces that contain amebae.
