Ancillary services

Hospital, or other inpatient health program, services other than room and board, and professional services. They may include X-ray, drug, laboratory or other services not separately itemized, but the specific content is quite variable.

Hospital services other than room and board. In a hospital, nursing services are included as part of “room and board”; since normal nursing services are not billed for separately, they are not ancillary services. The Oregon plan defines ancillary services as those services which are considered to be integral to successful treatment of a condition. Examples given are hospital services, laboratory services, radiation therapy, prescription drugs, medical transportation, rehabilitation, maternity case management, and hospice services.
