Animal model

Use of animals in biomedical research for conducting experiments. The quality, species, and breeding of the animal can help establish the type of animal to be used in the experiment.


An animal with a disease either the same as or like a disease in humans. Animal models are used to study the development and progression of diseases and to test new treatments before they are given to humans. Animals with transplanted human cancers or other tissues are called xenograft models.


An animal, other than human, used as an experimental system in research, experimental model.


The study of anatomy, physiology, or pathology in laboratory animals in order to apply the results to human function and disease.
