Antianxiety drugs

Drugs used primarily to alleviate anxiety.

Antianxiety drugs, also known as anxiolytics, do not cure anxiety disorders but can effectively relieve unpleasant symptoms. A common class of antianxiety drugs are the benzodiazepines, which work by enhancing the function of a neurochemical called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). Benzodiazepines are fast-acting but can be associated with addiction, abuse, and the impaired ability to drive.

A cluster of medications serves the purpose of alleviating anxiety symptoms. Among the primary classes of antianxiety drugs are benzodiazepines, buspirone, and beta-blockers, complemented by the frequent utilization of antidepressants. However, it is important to note that addressing the root disorder is most effectively achieved through counseling, psychotherapy, or alternative therapeutic modalities.

Benzodiazepine medications facilitate a state of mental and physical relaxation by diminishing nerve activity within the brain. While they can be employed to address insomnia, their usage for this purpose is generally discouraged due to their addictive nature. On the other hand, buspirone possesses a lower risk of addiction. Beta-blockers primarily target the physical manifestations of anxiety, such as tremors and rapid heartbeat, and are non-addictive in nature.
