A type of neurotic behavior characterized by continuous fear or apprehension which results in heightened anxiety, tension, sweating, and fatigue. Causes: (a) a conflict in one’s primitive organic and pleasure-seeking impulses (id), and the rational aspects of the personality or the self-concept (ego); (b) the inability for the person to close the gap between the actual self and perception of the ideal self; (c) a result of constraints that prevent a person from attaining self-actualization.
