In education, the act of concentrating attention on the material at hand.

A term which, when used to describe computer software, refers to a program designed to accomplish a given task not related to the computer itself. Examples of applications include word processing, accounting, inventory control, and laboratory reporting. Accounting itself can be divided into such applications as accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger. Application software is distinguished from utility programs, languages, and the like.


A program designed to perform a specific function directly for the user or, in some cases, for another program.
