Area agencies on aging

Also known as AAAs, a network of local offices of the Federal Administration on Aging that provides assistance to older people across the country. Agencies are funded by the Older Americans Act, which allocates federal money to states. States in turn distribute money to local AAAs to operate programs for people age 60 and older. Area Agencies on Aging do not charge for services. Area Agencies on Aging coordinate existing community services for older people and help them gain access to them. The types of assistance vary considerably from place to place, but may include transportation, home-delivered meals, home health aide services, and adult day care programs. The AAA branch serving an area is usually listed in the government section of the telephone directory under “aging services” or “elder services.” The Eldercare Locator, also federally funded, is a nationwide telephone service designed to help older people and their caregivers find local resources.
