Attention deficit disorder (ADD)

A DSM-lII-R category for a childhood disorder characterized by develop- mentally inappropriate short attention span, poor concentration, and frequent hyperactivity.


A group of disorders associated in underachievement and low motivation and classified as (a) minimal brain dysfunction; (b) learning disability syndrome, (c) hyperactive child syndrome.


A condition in which a person is unable to concentrate, does things without considering their actions properly and has little confidence. It occurs mainly in children.


Syndrome, affecting mostly males, characterized by learning and behavioral problems. These include short attention span, impulsivity, hyperactivity, and impairments in perceptual, language, and motor skills. The cause is unknown; originally thought to just affect children, an adult form is now recognized.


A form of mental illness usually diagnosed during childhood. Symptoms include inability to concentrate, pay attention for any length of time, restlessness, and hyperactivity.


A disorder characterized by a limited attention span, impulsivity, and in certain instances, hyperactivity.
