  • Stewardship

    The acceptance of responsibility for the wise use and protection of the earth’s natural resources.  

  • Sternum

    Breastbone; an elongated, flattened bone forming the middle of the thorax, which articulates with the clavicles and first 7 ribs and serves for the attachment of numerous muscles.   • Sternocleidomastoid muscle

    The large muscle that is easily felt at the side of the neck attached to the mastoid bone at the top and the sternum at the bottom. A muscle in the neck, running from the breastbone to the mastoid process. Muscle that flexes the neck in a forward motion.  

  • Sternoclavicular joint

    The articulation between the clavicle, the sternum, and the cartilage of the first rib with an articular disc, subdividing the joint into two cavities. The joint space between the sternum and the medial extremity of the clavicle.  

  • Sterilize

    To render sterile or free from microorganism contamination. To eliminate bacteria and other microscopic organisms, the usual method is to immerse the object in water that has been heated to its boiling point or to expose it to steam or dry heat.  

  • Stereotyped movement disorders

    Conditions that are characterized by abnormal gross motor behaviors.  

  • Stereotype

    A preconceived, prejudiced view of the members of a particular group. A simplified idea of a person or a concept, often one that is prejudicial to others or lacking in finesse. An exaggerated or overgeneralized belief about an entire group of people, such as an ethnic group, religious group, or gender.  

  • Step test

    A submaximal exercise that measures the heart rate recovery after stepping on and off a bench for 3 min.  

  • Steppingstone theory

    The belief that the use of one drug leads to the use of more dangerous drugs, gateway drugs.  

  • Step allelism

    The concept of a series of alleles with graded effects on the same trait.
